Jannat director Kunal Deshmukh is ready with his next movie Tum Mile. While Jannat was based on match-fixing and the murder of Pakistan’s cricket coach Bob Woolmer, Tum Mile has the 26/7 Mumbai floods as its backdrop. “This will be India’s first natural disaster movie. We have had movies made on terrorism and crime, but nothing on natural disasters. Tum Mile is laden with mind-blowing special effects. All the effects have been done in India,” says Kunal.
“As a filmmaker, I like to deal with real incidences because it is compelling and requires a certain creative outlook. The floods had an impact on my life, so I decided to make a film on it. Maybe I will deal with fantasy or unreal subjects later,” says Kunal.
Recalling the floods in 2005, he says, “I have been born and raised in Mumbai. For three days, the city had to come to a standstill. People lost their homes and families, and were marooned on the streets. The sights and sounds of those three days had quite an impact on me and made me re-evaluate my life and value it more.”
The film features Soha Ali Khan opposite Emraan Hashmi. Shooting for the film took 75 days, but the floods schedule was harrowing and exhausting. “Shooting for 12 hours in water was exhausting. Your hands and feet get wrinkled and you have to take care of all the equipment and protect it from the water,” says Kunal.
