Wild child Charmme is now experiencing the calm after the storm. There is a certain tranquillity about her these days. It’s almost as if she has slayed all her demons after the success of her first Malayalam film Aagathan, in which she was brilliant as Sathyaraj’s daughter who is in love with a man seeking revenge on her father (played by Dileep).
In an exclusive to CT, Charmme — who was on an all-time low after the failure of her Laadam — said, “ I was expecting a lot from that film, which, I thought, would establish me in Kollywood. But unfortunately, it fizzled out. Believe me, I lost a lot of opportunities in Tamil as I did not do films with big heroes.” Now that her Malayalam film has become a hit, the actress says, “At the end of the day, it is content that matters. That has been proved by director Kamal sir’s Aagathan, which had a gripping story. I look great in the film, thanks to cameraman Ajay Vincent and my dress designer Ishita.”
Charmme feels that she needs to reinvent herself in Tamil as in Telugu she has the image of an actress who does powerful women-oriented films. Says Charmme, “Let me be honest — heroine-oriented subjects are not commercially viable in Tamil cinema. Here, you have to be an ultra-glamorous leading lady and do films only with superstars. Otherwise, it just doesn’t work. The audiences here pay money to see their superstars on screen and for heroines to get notice, it’s better to piggyback ride on them.” The actress has now decided that she will do films only with big saleable stars in Kollywood and avoid experimental films like Laadam. The actress is said to have recently signed up three Malayalam and a Kannada film; all with with top heroes.
Charmme confesses that she has made “a big mistake by overdoing skin show”. Says she, “I was just 13 when I came into the industry. I have exposed a lot, which I’m regretting now. It all happened because I was innocent.” She points out an incident when a still photographer of a film climbed a tree to get a top-angle shot without her knowledge and got a revealing look of her cleavage, which was highlighted in the posters! Says the peeved actress, “Skin show is all about camera angles, and from my experience, it can be done aesthetically with a filmmaker whom you can trust. Otherwise, it will become vulgar.”
Meanwhile, about rumours in Tollywood that she was spotted in Hyderabad’s posh night clubs with music director Devi Sri Prasad, the actress candidly says, “Devi Sri Prasad is a very genuine person and a beautiful soul and I’m very, very close to him. No further comments, please.” |
